I’ve always had a poetic view of food. Hunger-enticing aromas swirling about my place at the table and causing a most soul-filled joy. With the first bite, I pause, relishing the beauty of the flavors dancing on my tongue. Food is the element that brings us to the table, where life is lived and memories are made. ~Karista Bennett
Born in California and raised in Arkansas, Karista now lives in Oregon’s beautiful Willamette Valley with her husband, two daughters, and one adorable Australian Cattle Dog named Gus.
Cooking was not Karista’s first talent. She originally trained as a vocalist for 10 years. After college and a brief career in music and the stage, she took a detour and decided to jog down a different path.
Fast forward a few years, and she found herself with a beautiful young family to feed. Karista always said that once upon a time, anything she cooked “could have caused a slow and painful death.” While that sounds dramatic, it’s why she enrolled herself in culinary school. She couldn’t cook!
Take-out and starvation were not options, so Karista decided to train in the culinary arts. There, she discovered her unwavering passion for food and community.
Karista has come a long way from those early days as a young wife and mother struggling in the kitchen. After moving to the Pacific Northwest in 2002, she put her culinary skills to the test and began working as a private chef.
Her success led to developing a long-running series of culinary classes for the IACP Award–winning culinary school PCC Cooks in Seattle, Washington.
In 2009, she started a food blog called Karista’s Kitchen. She wanted to highlight approachable, real-food recipes that she created for the modern home chef. She believes food should not only satisfy hunger, it should also feed the soul, nourish the body, and delight the senses. In her unique and playful style, Karista’s recipes reflect the seasons and her take on reinvented vintage and French recipes.
Out of 500 contestants, Karista was selected the 2013 DaVinci Wine Storyteller, Culinary Arts category. From 2011- 2015, each year DaVinci Wine chose four professionals from the world of art, journalism, photography and culinary arts to travel to Italy and learn about the creation and history of DaVinci Wine. Karista had the glorious opportunity to visit local grape farmers, wine artisans and specialists, along with a handful of culinarians that make this region of the world so delicious. She often says she left a little piece of her heart in Italy.
Karista has appeared on Seattle’s KCTS 9 “Cooks at Home Show” and is a regular on-air recipe expert for KATU’s “AM Northwest” in Portland, Oregon. She has worked as a regular food writing contributor for the Issaquah Press in Washington and currently works as a professional recipe developer and food photographer for a select group of online and print food and lifestyle publications. Karista recently published the first issue of her magazine, A View to Delicious, co-published with VRAI Magazine, which has reached a global audience and online success.
Here at Karista’s Kitchen, you’ll always find an enticing, sometimes eclectic selection, of whole food and seasonal recipes prepared from the bounty of the Pacific Northwest. And… with a little decadence just for fun.
I wish you all good health, happy hearts and loads of love in your life around the table,
